Oven temperature

Evening all
This may be a silly question but its been bugging me for months now so apologies if it is a little random!!
I really want to start learning to bake but our oven doesn't have a temperature gauge (sticker with the temperature came off shortly after we moved in) we have tried explaining it to our estate agents but it seems they don't care or are able to do anything about it.
Some people have mentioned about getting a separate thermometer to put in the oven but if this is the only option, how would it wok and when it got to the right temperature, how would I know it wouldn't get hotter?
Sorry if this sounds simple but I really am very simple when it comes to things like this!!
Thanks xx

I suppose you could make your own scale. Ovens tend to go up to a max of about 220°-230°c And it's a linear progression from off. So, you ought to be able to mark your own scale but it might take a couple of experiments to check it out.You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0

I have an oven thermometer anyway, and my dial is still marked. Most ovens don't run to temperature anyway, so it is handy to know. Mine runs 25 degrees hotter than the markings suggest.
Have you tried googling white goods suppliers for a spare dial/temperature sticker? You can buy almost anything these days if you know the make and model no.
Also, if you are renting, always put it in writing to your EA. They can't just shrug then

Get yourself an oven thermometer and a Sharpie, spend an afternoon testing and marking the temps and you're away.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Thanks all

I will have a play and see what results I get! Our EA has been far from helpful throughout our whole tenancy so I have every little thing in writing so that when it does come to move, we will have proof of what we have reported.
Fingers crossed I can figure this out as I've been using this excuse for far too long to avoid baking cakes for the office hehe!*~* DayDreamer *~* LBM - May 2013
