Substation/pylons - what's a safe distance?

I was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice. We are about to buy a house in quite a rural area but it isn't that far away from a substation and some large pylons. They're about 250 metres away, they can't be seen from the house or garden though. I have read all about health risks etc and know there is limited evidence. In other threads people have talked about the dangers of being near substations but I'm not exactly sure what kind of distance people are referring to, is 250m considered to be too far away to worry about?

Am pretty confused as we love the house but since reading up about these things I'm really worried. We want to start a family pretty soon so it's a big consideration.

Any help at all would be great

Go ahead and start a family you little minx, just make sure the nippers don't retrieve their football from the grounds of the sub station, or fly their kite near the pylons.
Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.

The danger you speak of em is electromagnetic radiation and you are right that there is no consensus of opinion as to the dangers of being too near pylons.

Bur relax my friend. What is not in doubt is this........

The amount of radiation you absorb from these devices decreases the further away you are.

And the amount is determined by what is known as "the inverse square law"

Put simply, this states that if you move twice as far away.....

.... the amount of radiation decreases to 1/4

..... three times as far would result in a decrease to 1/9

I think you could be in more trouble using a mobile phone. ;)

Two things to consider: will it affect your health and could it be perceived to affect your health.

The former will worry you now, the latter when you come to sell the property on.

Massively if a health report comes out against them weeks before they want to sell! But then if you bought just after a scare report you could be laughing.

    Timing is all important.

If you were the buyer, would you think it funny if the sellers died of radiation poisoning between exchange and completion my friend?

    Would you go ahead?

    Or would it.............

Until two years ago we lived in a house with a pylon at the back of us two fields away. The wires used to buzz in damp weather but that stopped after modernisation of the wires. I used a meter to check for EM radiation and found none but the meter went ballistic when placed near the washing machine, microwave etc

However is this coincidence? In a row of 6 houses, 3 of the houses have had an occupier die from cancer

To be honest I am glad to be a long way from pylons now and although the house, a big detatched with a big garden was in an ideal village and an otherwise perfect location, I wouldn`t have bought it knowing what we now know. We sold the house easily and made a big profit over the 22 years we were there but I doubt if future selling will be so easy if theory becomes fact and who knows?

How about an electricity sub station which is housed in a small building? the power is coming from underground here, and is housed in an out house type building.

Personally I wouldn't buy near pylons, mobile phone masts or electric substations.

Too risky from a health and wealth point of view.
