Hi,
Hope you can help - I need to know what are eligobility criteria for Housing and Council Tax Benefit.
I am currently living in an rented property. The owner of the property is related to me and I'm not sure if I would be entitled to claim housing benefit. I am also on low income and also get working tax credit.
Thanks
MS

If the rental is on a commercial basis rather than just a deal for a relative. Take a look on your local council website and theres often an online calculator.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

We used to live in a house rented to us by my step son, what you need is to wite a note when you fill in the form stating the relationship and that you pay the full market rent and are not subsidised by your relative in any way. That did the trick for us.Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0

If you live on your own you can claim 25% discount on Council Tax.
When you apply for Housing Benefit help towards your rent make sure you include your Working tax credit on the application form as this is classed as income as well.0
