Help to get paid holiday from supermarket?

Hi, DS1 has recently got a, 9hrs per week, shelf stacking job at Morrisons. His manager told him to apply for holidays and has now put in several requests but the dates are fully booked.
We would like to go on holiday, as a family, and now don't know how to organise this. It is very complicated as it needs to fall in line with other members of my family so that someone else can take over my caring roll for my mum.
DS2 is at school , so we really need to take a holiday during July/August.
I have only ever worked as a Teacher so have no experience how to organise days off in the 'real world'.
DS1 has no sense of urgency .......
What is the best way of arranging his holiday... at the moment the requests are taking 10 days to get back to him.

if he only started working there in last few weeks all the good holiday dates will be taken ie school holidays
you have to be working for them when holiday forms come out to get the prime time dates but thats the same with most companies0 -
I work at Morrisons but bare in mind that its most likey a dif store!
Every department has thier own hoilday book which says if someone else is off that week...what he needs to do is look at this book to see what is avaible and book around others being off - speak to his manager about whats avaible before putting in his form would be the best way to do it.
But end day you can't force DS1 to do it? :S lolPeople don't know what they want until you show them.0 -

Thanks for that,
Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. DS1 is very, very keen to come with us on holiday. He just can't get his act together... too laid back and not knowing the system. I want to help, but, don't know the system either.
I was wondering if he could take unpaid leave....

He should get all his hoilday entitlement at start of the year for the whole year to use as he likes..unpaid leave doesn't make a differnerce as if the hoilday is rejected its because to many people are off at same time.
His wage slip should say how many hoildays he has.
You'll find it really hard to book hoildays for this time of year as its summer, and then most people book august off for the kids as well.People don't know what they want until you show them.0 -

Unpaid leave would be likely to result in his P45 being issued. If there is no holiday availability then that means the dept is running at minimum levels anyway. Unpaid leave will take them to even lower staffing levels.0 -

Re unpaid leave: Naively, I thought that they could use the wages DS1 would have received to pay someone else to cover his shift.
We have now got it sorted, thanks.
I went to the store with DS1 and had a look at the 'book' (thank you Kayalana99 )
It was really difficult to understand, but the department manager helped.
We went straight to personnel and had the dates signed off.
He did manage to get a weekend in August and mid July
This was probably not a good look for a 17 yr old boy but it's done now.
Next year it will be easier for him to do as he knows the system.

Was it "take your mum to work day"?
Seriously though, I am sure next time he will show a bit more drive and make the effort himself. Amazing what teenagers will put up with to get a free holiday. 0 -
or to avoid having your mum coming to the workplace with you. :rotfl:harrys_dad wrote: »Was it "take your mum to work day"?

All these things are hard the first time. Fortunately mine were usually able to sort these things themselves once I'd told them how to ask the question. And I do see their managers reasonably often (local cinema = good deals for us!) and can say "Did he ask for that holiday I told him to book?"Signature removed for peace of mind0
