DVLA refused my online vehicle tax renewal as my insurers had made a mistake with my reg number. According to the insurers it was their fault and I have been driving uninsured. Can I claim my insurance premiums back? ETA: Apparently not. Thanks for the immediate replies.

Your Insurer would pay any genuine claims so the answer is no.

You are also partly responsible - they issue you a certificate of insurance and you are ment to check it
  • Two very good points. Thank you.

this is unusual in the internet age, most times I get a quote now, it is the reg no that drives the vehicle make/model selection...

but no, no premium is due back, they would have indemnified you and it is a simple error. (and indeed that is better than getting the money back and then getting slapped with a driving without insurance conviction!)
  • I'd have insured it in tandem to cancelling the current policy, no worries. Having had my brain frazzled by someone in a call center telling me to find a fax machine so I can take a faxed copy of my new certificate to the post office for the car tax ... along with ensuring me that as a gesture of good will they will waive the fee for this correct certificate ... I'm grateful for the practical advice which makes sense now I can think clearly.

No need for a fax machine

You can find fax to email numbers from various providers.

Some are on 0845 and similar numbers, and on a local area code is possible, but for this one off use you don't really care.

Maybe the incorrect reg was for an identical car.

I had a car a few years ago that had an identical twin with a reg number that was next number up from mine. I know because, quite by chance, I happened to park next to it in Oxford.
