NHS deducted £900 paid me £40 this month without telling me!

Hi,
I work for the NHS on a part-time basis (18 hrs per week)and usually come home with approx £900.
I have over the last few months moved a lease car contract over to salary sacrifice with the NHS, the delay I'm processing means that I expect to owe a sum for the increase by moving to salary sacrifice ........... But today I looked at my bank/payslip and the NHS had only paid me just over £40, the usual pension, NI & tax had been taken along with something listed net overpayment.
I rang salary dept who told me the £900 taken was as I owed for the car, yet, at no point have I been informed of the figure owed or in fact that they were going to take any money except the contracted payment, they told me they posted a letter last week......I told them I haven't received a letter as if I had I would have contacted them earlier, than payday when I realised they had wiped my account clean bar £40.
I now can't pay my mortgage this month, & still don't know what the figure that I owe them is, my husband thinks they have breached the law as I was unaware & therefore did not consent to the monies being taken & he also thinks they should have left me with at least the minimum wage.
I do not dispute that I owe/owed something in arrears for the car salary sacrifice yet thought they would negotiate repayment with me & then inform me prior to additional money being taken.
Can anyone help

You will have signed some paperwork authorising the payment from salary - ask for a copy of that and see what that says.0

Had you not agreed in advance what salary sacrifice you'd be taking? I know it's not an exact science because both you and employer save on the NI and pension, but if you had a rough figure, why not put that aside towards the underpayment?Signature removed for peace of mind0

So you have had the car on a "salary sacrifice" basis for some months without sacrificing any of your salary and acknowledge that arrears would be due. So over those months you will have been putting aside the approximate amount of the sacrifice (when surely a figure was suggested before you agreed). That can be used to pay the mortgage.
The contracted payment is what they are taking isn't it? Surely you did not agree to sacrifice a completely indeterminate amount.
Is the gross amount (before deducting "overpayment") below minimum wage?0
