Employer moving pay date from 13th to 28th.

Apologies if this thread is in the wrong place.

Our employer has told us we will have to be paid on the 28th of each month instead of the 13th,from December,we will then be paid every month on the 28th.

That means we will have to wait an extra 2 weeks for our pay.

He says every employer has to do this because the government says so,due to tax credits or something!

We have had nothing in writing until we got a letter yesterday asking if we want the two week delay to come all at once or a few days at a time until December.

I have heard nothing about the government doing this.

Can anyone help?

I wouldn't get too bothered about it, you won't lose money
Take the two weeks money straight away on the 13th Dec and change all your DDs to the 2nd or 3rd of each month

That means we will have to wait an extra 2 weeks for our pay. Were you being paid on, for example, 13 May for the whole of May?

He says every employer has to do this because the government says so,due to tax credits or something! Don't believe that - they are just wanting to blame an outside body rather than admit it is their cash flow which interests them.

Keep with the 13th for as long as possible and prepare for the later date afterwards. You are adults who can manage your finances and don't need a phased change.

We will be paid on the 13th of November, then the 28th of December.

When we are paid on the 13th it is for the whole of the month,I think this is what they will point out to justify the change.

the month previous or the month 13th of the previous month to the 12th of the month you are in?

Any payroll can pay monthly staff for the month they are in they just have a cut off and anything over paid gets taken back in the next month.

At my old job got paid on the 25th for the month 1st to the last day of the month

Cut off date was the 20th or nearest work day to that and then say you went sick on the 25th for 5 days then they would take that back the following month

Why not ask for an advance to be paid on the last mid month pay date to cover the 2 weeks with no £ and then when they pay you in December they take back the advance.

I think it must be particularly annoying that the change is in December, when some people will want early payment in order to pay for Christmas presents.

However they have given fair notice and I would think most companies pay nearer the end of the month than the middle. In fact in more than 40 years I have not worked for an employer who paid as early as the 13th in the month for which they were paying.

(Interestingly, or not, I have known employers who, as an exception, pay earlier than normal in December just because of Christmas preparations.)

Many employers do -makes for a long January though !

Interesting the employer is blaming the government -funny how it seems to be affecting the OP's company and no-one else's............................

nothing to do with the government.

However if they are giving you the option to stage it, then take that....

and of course ensure you are protected and paid for hours worked during the transition as it needs to catch up with itself somewhere.....

Why allow the employer to keep the money longer than is necessary?

The notice given allows the staff to plan for the change (like re-arranging SOs and DDs where possible or saving up to have the funds ready when needed). I'd just switch at one time.

the employer wouldn't be keeping the money more than is necessary in a staged change.

Either the employee plans for a six week month in Dec, or they can stage it three days at a time and soften the blow.

The employer is going to do this regardless, so many would rather have a delay of three days a month to get to the 28th rather than trying to adapt all at once and in December.

wouldn't bother me either way, I budget beyond the month anyway, so a two week pay delay wouldn't affect me, but for most this would be the more seamless transition.

My old pay date was the 25th so they only paid on Xmas Eve which was not good for a lot of people.
