Our surgery has eight partners. Only today I wondered why it is not open all day, with a couple of doctors on rota.
The others would then be able to do their other work.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

It is entirely the point - there is no valid reason why they should have to work weekends when other services are accessible if needed.
The only apparent reason is convenience, but if they work at the weekend then they will have to reduce their hours in the week, so making it less convenient for someone else. They can't please everyone.
Unless of course you are suggesting more GPs are recruited? If so, who do you suggest pays for this?
I suggest they work shifts.
Every other profession works weekends how do these lazy doctors get away with it in 2013. Disgrace!0 -

My doctors is open 9:30 - 1 and 2-6 mon-friday that's it no weekends no late surgery (that was cut unannounced 4 months ago).
I work an hour and half away from where I live so even if I have to attend for a perscription review I have to make the time up at work or go unpaid.

Same.
8am to 8pm weekdays
8am to 1pm Saturdays
There is also an emergency GP scheme which operates out of the local cottage hospital out of hours and Sunday.0 -

MY GP uses 111 as an out of hours and we had occasion to test it last weekend. I got through straight away and was triaged. I had a call back from a doctor at a local hospital and he then made me an appointment at 10pm Saturday evening (45 mins after my phone call) at a walk-in GP surgery at my nearest hospital.
I called them at 8pm and was sitting in front of a GP by 10.15pm.

I haven't worked a weekend since 1981 and have been in continuous full-time employment since then."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0
