    Have you tried Phenergan?

    The liquid form (NOT tablets).

Can't remember the dose but as a teen about 5 spoonfuls of this icky stuff (washed down with lemonade) would knock me out on a long trip & then I'd wake up starving & eat everything in sight. :rotfl:

Don't get sick any more unless I go on a boat (so I avoid them).

Sucking boiled sweets helped when we were kids. I seem to remember my grandparents saying "suck barley sugar" for travel sickness.

I have suffered from travel sickness all my life and during one of my holidays to Morocco I went on a day trip by bus to Marrakesh which went through the Atlas mountains on a twisty road I felt terribly sick. Although I love tea and coffee the thought of them was making me feel even more nauseous when the bus stopped at a caf! for a break. I ordered a cup of mint tea which was made by literally dunking some mint leaves and stalks into a cup of hot water. I was surprised at how good it was for dodgy stomachs and now when I go on cruises I always take a box of peppermint tea bags with me for when I feel a bit quiffy.

They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.
  • Many years ago I used to suffer from bad migraines and accidentally found that drinking room-temperature tonic water cleared the head-ache within an hour or so. I was soon without the problem and it hasn't returned. I’ve found tonic also helps a little if one has over-indulged on greasy food. When I crewed on a yacht I used to drink a little Courage's light ale (remember them? Remember that?) to ease early-in-the-voyage (cast-off nausea) queasiness and then found tonic helped just as much and no drunkenness (well, you have to leave out the gin, of course!). It all seems in retrospect to be linked to mild anxiety but it might be worth a try for the car sickness?

I had awful travel sickness when I was a child, I grew out of it thankfully. However I still can't travel in the back seat of a car, or read / text etc!

Sickness bands didn't help me, nor tablets. Sitting on a "magic newspaper" often actually worked (mind over matter?!).

The best thing for me was when I started to feel sick to close my eyes, not to talk to anybody, open the window a crack and focus on breathing the fresh air until the sickness passed.

I've also always suffered from motion sickness and agree with much of what's already been said. Anxiety/expectancy is definitely a factor and perhaps worsens it (As a child, I got to the point of being sick before I even got in the car!) but motion sickness exists regardless of the anxiety.

I found that I associated certain smells with the car and therefore with being sick and then ultimately, the smell made me sick. Even thinking about it is making me feel sick! A gentle fragrance that you maybe change regularly could help?

As a child I used to either sing or sleep through journeys. Both worked. As an adult I use chewing gum. I literally chew my way through a journey and it really does work. If I'm on a shorter journey and haven't used gum and start to feel sick, singing is a way through it (it also usually prompts my husband to take the corners a bit slower!). Fresh air is also a definite help.

We used to use 1L juice cartons as receptacles! They fold flat and can be stowed in the pockets on the back of the front seats and easily opened when required!

Motion sickness can really limit something that we otherwise take for granted. I hope you find something that works for your family.

I have had problems with travel sickness all my life. Many of the OTC pills or chewing gum prevent me from actually being sick, but I still feel the nausea and can be sleepy. As a child I didn't mind because I just went to sleep in the back of the car. Now, on long drives, this is a problem when it comes to taking my turn at the wheel. Cinnarizine/sturgeon works really well for me. I don't feel sick at all. Just remember to take them at least an hour before you start your journey. They don't work quickly, but the effect lasts for many hours. Ask you GP for a prescription. They are quite expensive to buy.
