    Some recent experiences:

    - parcel left outside and ruined by rain
    - 3 orders where wrong items sent
    - 2 items incorrectly described on website
    - item arrived smashed owing to totally inadequate packaging
    - 2 items didn't work and had to be returned
    - 3 orders not fully packed, though fully charged. In two cases, never did get the difference refunded
    - order from online chemists, took 12 days to get it all delivered, paid £12 for Saturday delivery that never happened, still waiting for refund on that
    - etc etc

I find internet shopping generally very good through I tend to use sites like ebay and Amazon marketplace.

With both of these you can leave feedback for the seller.

In one case one of my nephews' brought headphones. They are truly a piece of cr*p as they broke as soon as they were used. In addition the sound was distorted.

He couldn't be bothered to leave feedback for the seller but as I was on the computer and he was already logged in I left the feedback for him.

The next day Amazon offered him a refund for the headphone.

On eBay some sellers get really upset if you leave them bad but honest feedback.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

ebays feedback system is superb. It makes it incredibly easy to spot a good seller and a seller with good feedback will always give good service to avoid the risk of getting half a star knocked off.

The only bad experience I've had with ebay was ordering some shirts from 3 different chinese vendors. 1 turned up, 2 didn't. One ended up refunding me 100% and one refunded me half blaming chinese customs.

The only real shopping I do now is clothes .

Me too, and only then for things I don't know for sure will fit.

Even shoes I buy online now.

And most food, and just about everything else unless its urgently needed today.

In the last 3 years I've gone from spending 90% in shops to 90% online.

Most shops are now surplus to requirements. Turn them into badly needed houses instead.

I have only had three bad internet experiences. Two didn't deliver and refunded (despite saying they had). the other one was a con site and I obtained a refund from my bank.

Rents, councils being greedy for car parking and falling discretionary income all play apart.

And the worst thing about all this is, once Amazon has seen off the competition it'll be able to charge what it likes and people won't be able to go elsewhere.

This is why I decided not to invest in commercial property a few years ago, it just worried me that the internet could have a significant effect on the long term viability of commercial property (as a whole, obviously some sectors will be affected more than others).

I invested some of an AVC pot in a commercial property fund that was doing well at the time. It has never recovered since the last crash and after the initial fall has flat lined.

I appreciate that only apart is retail.

It will shortly be bumped into a life strategy part equity vehicle.

.......+ then one day the rents drop to a level where someone decides to meet a need and it is profitable to do so..... and then the whole new cycle begins.

.....and the internet is now getting to be dominated by a few big players....like a tescopoly online so it will evolve in a different way too over time.
The one bit of gossip I did hear about was a specialist pet food provider. He was mainly a wholesaler but decided to open an Amazon store to spread his brand around a bit more. His sales grew and became huge then Amazon approached him to buy wholesale from him and closed down his direct sales site.

Bet you can't get much more than overalls, donkey jackets and rigger boots up there.;)

Probably 20+ years ago I watched a documentary on the railway at Fort William . They had a railway worker describing how the majority of purchases were through the likes of Littlewoods and Grattan, mail order, because they couldn't get the choice locally.

Now we have tinternet and a credit card.

The catalogue companies were more popular years ago as they offered credit terms when most people didn't have credit cards.

Sure, some people used them as they had more choice if you didn't live near a large town/city but their biggest draw was the £1 p wk payments facility.
