Rather than get too heated, I would think that the obvious thing to do is to request that the employer retrospectively changes the leave to bereavement leave. You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0

Emergency Dependents Leave, to which you have a statutory right. However, that is usually unpaid, and is intended to allow you to find time to make alternative arrangements, not necessarily to do the caring yourself. If you have no childcare what would you call this?
I think ValHaller's advice is sound.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Our Company, pay for the day of the service involving the death of Grandparents/ Parents/ Spouse/ Children, or if the person has been asked to be a coffin bearer for a service involving others.
But depending on circumstances other discretionary payments may be paid for other time taken off involving bereavements.0 -
Your company should have a "leave of absence" policy, which will make entitlement clear, and also make clear what counts as "close relative", if they use that phrase. You refer in your original post to "5 days bereavement leave", so presumably there is a written policy somewhere. What does it say?
In any case, your boss does seem to have been somewhwt insensitive.0 -

Consider re-visiting your employer with a view to avoid heated arguments and request the original decision is looked at again with a view to your absence being recorded as compassionate leave.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0
