I have just been talking to 02 live chat, my contract with vodafone is coming to an end and I was tempted with the 02 sim only deal 12 month contract, unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, and 1GB data for £21 a month (check the 02 site to see) I decided to talk to an online advisor and this is a copy and paste of the conversation. BEWARE!
Welcome to O2. Someone will be with you soon.
You're through to 'O2 : Abhishek'
Abhishek: Hi I'm O2 : Abhishek. How can I help?
James: Hello, I am a contract customer with vodafone, with 1 month left on my contract, I was just going to upgrade with them, but I am looking for an alternative
Abhishek: Okay.
James: I have seen a pay monthly for £21 a month unlimited minutes and texts and 1gb data, for 12 month contract with you, I am interested in this, my question I would like a HTC desire c, can I buy the pay as you go hand set and then put a sim only sim in it?
Abhishek: Yes sure.
Abhishek: You can definitely put the sim in it.
James: so If I buy a pay as you go phone for 02 I can put an 02 sim in it?
Abhishek: Yes you can but make sure that you ask for the micro SIM if needed.
Abhishek: Because some of the handsets do require micro sim.
James: ok, i was just wondering, because the sim free version of the phone is nearly double the price
James: i guess the phone will be locked to the 02 network, which would be fine,
James: can I ask i am also interested in getting a phone for my daughter with the £21 a month unlimited calls and texts, is there any way she can go over this? like a fair usage or anything?
Abhishek: Let me check that for you.
Abhishek: I'll be right back.
Abhishek: To say thankyou for chatting with us today, we're offering you a 20% discount on all accessories. Just go to the Accessoryshop and use this code when you check out – SERVICE20.
James: ok
Abhishek: Thanks for waiting.
Abhishek: James, even if the phone is locked to o2 you can get it unlocked by getting back to us.
Abhishek: And as per the fair usage policy you can use 300 minutes and 500 texts.
James: is that for the unlimited text and calls package?
James: £21.00 12 Months Unlimited minutes Unlimited texts 1GB data 1 month early upgrade
Abhishek: Yes sure, it's the fair usage policy.
Abhishek: Yes sure.
James: that is not what is advertised?
James: £21.00 12 Months Unlimited minutes Unlimited texts 1GB data 1 month early upgrade
Abhishek: Yes we do advertise it as unlimited texts and minutes but as per the fair usage policy the limitations are 300 minutes and unlimited texts.
James: then surely that is misleading? your contract for 300 minutes and unlimited texts is only £11 a month
Abhishek: Yes it is.
Abhishek: And 600 minutes for £16 a month.
James: but the unlimited is more expensive and less minutes?
Abhishek: James., I'll explain you if you get the same deal anywhere else even you'll find the fair usage policy over there too.
Abhishek: It has been decided by Ofcoms and followed by all of the leading network providers.
James: ok well I don't think this is right, Unlimited I agree should have a fair usage, but not scaled right back to your lowest tariff?

Just to add, a little more agruing and this is how the conversation ended:
James: ok well I don't think this is right, Unlimited I agree should have a fair usage, but not scaled right back to your lowest tariff?
Abhishek: James, I'm sorry it was a typo error.
Abhishek: You get 3000 minutes and 5000 texts in total as per the fair usage policy.
Abhishek: I'm sorry it's all because of the keyboad has started playing.TOTAL AT START £13606.90 27/03/2018

How is it a rip off? They tell you its subject to fair usage, They used to count unlimited at 9999 texts.0

if you read the full transcript, they were saying 300 mins.TOTAL AT START £13606.90 27/03/2018

TBH I can see the CA's error. I quite often miss off a zero accidentally when writing thousands due to crappy keyboards. Type too fast and only one zero registers instead of twoThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

if your already with vodafone, why not just got for the Vodafone Red 12 month sim only contract ?
its £20.50 a month and has unlimited calls and text (without a FUP) and 1gb data0 -
Not a rip off at all - I got this and can vouch that its not capped at 300 mins... I don't check my allowances but I hammer my phone and my bill has never been over the £20 something unless I've used an 0845 number... Only vodafone do a similar deal..0

It's not a rip off - the poor guy made a typo twice, and later corrected it. Not perfect, but these things happen, and as I said, he corrected it. What bit of that can you not follow?0
