    It's from a private seller

The only "warranty" or protection with a private seller is that it must be fit for purpose and as described afaik. No proper timescales beyond acceptance of the goods, afaik.

Someone might be along to tell me I'm wrong ; someone helpful might be along to give (or at least their version of) the correct position. :D

I've bought from Argos on ebay before and bought a pair of wireless earphones. They broke 10 months later and I contacted them, I was sent a replacement set after sending my pair back within days.

I did read though that the product came with a 12 month warranty within the description though so it may be a case of reading and asking before bidding. If your on the other side of the fence though and are wondering, it doesn't hurt to ask the person you bought the item from, sometimes they have the original proof of purchase and this would entitle you to return the item to the store or manufacturer in question.
