calculating tax rebate

last tax year, i was out of work several months.. found temp work for last 3months.

total pay / JSA was around £7k- for ease of adding up, say £1k less than the personal tax allowance.

Do I get this £1k back, or the tax I paid while working, or just or a higher tax code for this year..?

If your total earnings was less than your tax allowance then you will get any tax you paid back. When you get a P60 for the year, call the tax people and ask for a refund. They advised me to call but you could write.

If you handed in a P45 to the organisation through which you worked the last three months then you should have paid the correct amount of tax for the year and there will be no tax rebate.

It sounds as though you think the tax system might make up your pay to the level of the personal allowance if you didn't receive that much by way of your JSA and pay. It doesn't work like that.

I think it sounds the same to me Little voice. But on what you earnt with the looks of it as long as you work more than 30 hours each week you will probably get working tax credit this year as it is based on what you earnt last year

If you paid some tax and your total tax year pay does not reach taxable level, then you should receive that tax you paid back.
This will happen after HMRC received info from all the sources (all of your employers in the year and JSA etc) or if can provide them with the info.
It is certainly speeded up if you contact them. If you are just waiting for the computer to do it's normal run, you might wait for some time.

You should have had your P60 by now.

    What does that say?

That would be for the tax year 2012-13. ("2012 tax year" is imprecise because tax years start on 6 April.)

you'll need to add what you got from your jobseekers to what you earnt from your job and if there is some tax due if you were under your allowance and have paid too much tax then i'd give them a call. If you are working now though then you might get working tax credit
