How do you look for a job ?

It might seem an odd question but I haven't looked for a job since 1984 and in those days you went to your local job centre or looked at the ads in the local paper.
I have been self employed for 25 years and looking for a change of direction.

What industry are you in?0

Car body repairs but don't want to do it anymore.....I know it's going to be difficult, most employers won't want someone who has been self employed for most of their working lives, never mind someone with no experience and being 50 years old.
Would prefer something part time actually,it's the process of looking for work that is alien to me0 -
Local paper, Company websites, job websites (such as Monster.co.uk), agencies, send out speculative CV's to people you might want to work for.

Search Google maps for companies, LinkedIn, Jobs and Talent, sites like Monster, Reed, CV Library, Indeed, TotalJobs, Jobsite, industry specific ones (you can check online), Twitter, Facebook, Metro, Guardian online, Telegraph (newspapers online etc), Gumtree, Cityjobs etcWe’ve had to remove your signature. What sort of work do you want, office, production line, IT, retail? If you have an idea then you can narrow your fields of search. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

I wish I knew what I wanted :think:0 -
See if you can attend assessment days or working interviews with companies you may like to work for - these types of "interview" seem to be on the rise these days and I cannot recommend highly enough if you can get one go for it! I dubiously went along to an assessment last week, it turned out not so bad! got much more of an insight into the company was a great morning and got to meet possible other colleagues a real mix to! before anything got serious (ok we were all as apprehensive and thinking omg it turned out!)
There is also job fairs to - often advertise in the local paper/via jobcentre - might be worth a browse0 -
if putting cv on the listing sites, tweak and refresh every couple of days or som to keep your details near top of agents/employers' search results!Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -
Although geared towards young people this will work for any career changer.
Go to the following website
http://www.myworldofwork.co.uk/
You will have to register
Do the "My strengths" section
Do the "My DNA" section
The results will tell you a lot about yourself.
Then use some of the other tools such as CV generator and A to Z of careers.
Have you thought of using your existing networks to look for alternatives. If you are in vehicle repairs who do you meet every day, do business with, do any of them know of any opportunities.
So using your own networks you could probably have contacts in:
parts sales
driving - taxi and chauffeur
Van hire
You get the drift, write down a list of all the people you come into contact with and then ask yourself if you would like to do their job, and if you fancy any of the jobs, put out some feelers. It's amazing how many jobs are found "word of mouth" especially if you have a good personal reputation.0 -
After giving it a little thought I was wondering whether it would be worth me getting fork lift driver training/licence,it's something I did as a 16yr old and there's an awful lot of distribution/warehousing in my area.0
