in Cutting tax
My husband received his final wage slip from his previous employment - it said he had earned 2 hours overtime at £17 he had £169 in unpaid leave, he had £0 national insurance and his tax said -£158 tax, his take home pay was £0 - can anyone please tell me what the minus sign before the tax means. Also when he first started this job in his 1st month he got charged £120 extra tax then what he did the following months this I understand to be emergency tax - will this be refunded by the tax office or do we have to apply for this - hope this makes sense and someone can shed some light on the minus sign - thanks in advance

The minus sign should be a tax refund.
On the income side you said he had £17 overtime , what else was exactly on the slip, was there another deduction?0 -
You don't have to ask for tax refunds during the tax year when the p45 from his old job is uploaded he should come off emergency tax code and go back onto the cumulative tax code. If it doesn't happen within a month or so you can speed the process up by ringing tax office. Look at hmrc website it explains tax codes or call them they are helpfull. Best call early morning before 9am or around 7 in evening before they close0

I read it as
£158 tax rebate + £17 overtime
less £169 for unpaid leave (I assume he has taken more leave than his prorata entitlement)
which I would thought would leave him with a payment of £6 and not £00 -
Thanks Caz3121, we knew he would not be entitled to much pay if any as he finished work a few days after his last pay date and yes he had taken more leave than entitled to, I just knew it didn't add up, and I wasn't quite sure if the minus before the tax was a rebate. thanks for your advice0

there was no other figures on the income side - there was £169 unpaid leave on the other side as he had taken more annual leave than entitled to
