I'm making Christmas puddings, jams and chutneys for Christmas gifts but have no idea when to start, I know chutneys age well but how far in advance should I make these things?

Hi, think you can't go wrong with making chutneys now, normally the longer you leave them to mature the better they will be.
Jam will be fine too (I normally make mine in July/August).
As for Xmas cakes/puddings I can't help you, sorry, I don't make them as I can't stand them, lol.
Good luck, I'm sure it will all turn out just fine.0 -
Thanks, I don't like Christmas cakes/puddings either but I know the people ill be making them for do! I know with cakes they're supposed to be made at least a week before eating but I don't know how far in advance they can be made!0

If you are going to include rum or brandy in them then you can make them now, wrap them well, store them in a cool place and feed them with rum or brandy once a month. I make Black Cake every year for Christmas, a West Indian rich fruit cake with lots and lots of rum in it, my fruits are currently soaking in rum in a celebrations container!!! I will make the cakes about September October, wrap them in foil, and feed them every three weeks until Christmas when myself and one of my Brother in laws will have our unveiling .........to the amusement of the rest of the family,,,,,,,,,,who will then judge our efforts!!
So in short if you are making any cakes or puds, use lots of rum or brandy, wrap well, and feed. If you are planning on alcohol free then wait till December and maybe freeze?0 -
Yes I'm definitely planning on making ones with alcohol in! Would wrapping in foil and then putting in a container be enough? I'm planning on making little ones. Thanks.0

Don't wrap directly in foil. The fruit acids can eat through it. I use cling film or grease proof followed by foil.
BTW I make my Christmas puds once every three yrs. Loads of brandy, cling film back of the cupboard and forget.0
