Bankruptcy question regarding property

With my mounting debts of now more than £40k because of the interest/charges that the banks keep adding on, I see little option but to file for bankruptcy.
Can someone please talk me through the process? Is it scary? I will leave work here end August, never to return. At which point should I apply for bankruptcy? Will I need to declare my property in South Africa even though it is mortgage'd to the maximum?
Help please! Keep getting scary letters from the banks who will probably hand me over to collections agencies shortly.
Thanks in advance
