Making money from blogging?

I'd like to make money from a blog but don't know where to start.
I know you need a lot of traffic and the money can take a while to come in.
I also know it is best to blog about something you are passionate about because you are likely to give up if you are not interested in what you're blogging about.
How do you make money? Is it from ads being on your site?
I'd like to blog about movies but I'm not sure if I'd get enough visitors because there's so many blogs and sites about movies already established.
Would you have to pay to have photos from the movie? since you'd be making money from the blog?

Hey Penny.

A large portion of income from blogs, if it's on your own server, come from traffic ads and, if you do manage to get high traffic, some type of affiliate set-up. Companies may approach you wanting you to post something about a service/product they offer and in exchange they give you a share of the profits when people use your coupon code. You can also approach companies for this but probably not recommended if you have no idea what you're doing.

Additionally, quite a few large blogs have their own products of some sort, be it physical merchandise or e-books. They can partner with other individuals that may or may not have a product that needs an avenue of purchase, where the blog would then receive a share of those profits, too.

However, through simple blogging about movies, you'll likely only be getting ad revenue as there isn't much room for referrals or partnerships. If you go through Google AdSense, they have some requirements and restrictions your blog might not meet, so stay on a look out for that.

I've seen some blogs have donation buttons, too.
