Has anyone used these and had problems?

I am still upset about what happened to me yesterday I haven't had any sleep.

My dentist of 16 years has retired, so I had to get a new one, I looked around and there is only one in my town taking new patients on OASIS.

The receptionist was really nice and that is about the best thing I can say about this place. I was asked the usual questions, do a medical history then I was shown into the dentist.

I saw a dentist who for want of better words was really up himself. I was then asked what was I doing about the sugar in my diet ( years ago doc prescribed me glandosane which they later found a can was like eating a bowl of sugar, so had a few fillings due to that) i don't eat lots of sugary food, and don't like hot drinks. What was he implying?

He then told me I had really bad teeth, which upset me has in 15 years I have never been told this, in fact my old dentist told me I had better teeth than him.

He then preceded to lecture me that this had been going on for years, and repeatedly stabbed my gums with something sharp till I had a mouthful of blood, to try and prove a point I just wanted to burst into tears, if he's like this at a check up, what is he going to be like if I needed any work doing, no wonder they are advertising for new patients if this is the way they get treated.

they want me to go back to see a hygienist there, which I don't think I'm going to do, but its made me paranoid about my teeth know. :(

  • I used to work in a dental practice and I doubt it will be Oasis policy to be so blunt with patients. Some dentists are more hardline than others and some are completely tactless and others are plain rude. From my experience, your gums will only hurt and bleed when prodded with the probe if you've got a bit of gum disease - like millions of us have. The hygienist will be able to help you fix this, please go along and see him/her - chances are they'll be perfectly nice, unlike the dentist you've just seen. I know you're upset but the dentist might have a point about your gums so don't let his attitude stop you from getting them treated. If your diet's ok now then the condition of your teeth shouldn't be too much of a worry but if gum disease goes unchecked you could end up with them receeding and leaving you with loose teeth (in the long term, not meaning to scare you!) . If I were you, I'd politely ask if your registration could be transferred to a different (hopefully nicer) dentist.

Glandosane does not have any sugar in it (ingredients Carboxymethylcellulose, Sodium - 0.5000g, Sorbitol - 1.5000g, Sodium Chloride - 0.0422g, Potassium Chloride - 0.0600g, Calcium Chloride (2 H2O) - 0.0073g, Magnesium Chloride (6 H2O) - 0.0026g, Potassium Mono-Hydrogen Phosphate - 0.0171g, lemon flavoured co2 propellant ) in fact sugar is not present in any artificial saliva as it is a real no no in people with dry mouths.

However it is used as an artificial saliva replacement if you have dry mouth. Dry mouth causes lots of dental problems including increased decay because plaque and food aren't washed away or neutralised.

Some causes of dry mouth eg diabetes also carry an increased risk for gum disese and badly controlled diabetes can cause problems with decay because of having to use eg lucozade to control hypos.

It sounds as if the dentist was trying to give you good advice but in a blunt and tactless way, as the other poster said gums don't bleed or give pain on probing unless there is a problem. and measuring gum problems with a probe should always be part of a standard dental check up so he wasn't trying to prove a point.

Take the advice on board and if still unhappy switch dentists.

A new NHS contract is being piloted that means people will have more responsibility for their own health and preventative advice has to be given and acted on before any other treatment can go ahead. People are given a grading red, yellow, green based on their oral health and that determines what further treatment they can have.

I go to an Oasis Dentist as it was the only NHS one available at the time. All of the Dentists in it are Spanish and there English is not great. I don't enjoy going as I find my Dentist to have a very poor bedside manner and makes me feel like she can't be bothered at times. I asked to change and was told that she was the one that was assigned to me and that was that.

I think part of it may be the language barrier but that also maybe their training did not concentrate on customer service / relating to the patients etc.

A big part of going to the Dentist is having one that you can trust etc / get on with.

Oasis is my dental practice, never ever had a problem. Lovely dentists, dental nurses and receptionists.

In fact I would go as far as to say 'exceptionally good'
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Oasis is a company that owns and runs dental practices.

    It employs dentists.

Like any practice you come across, it is just a building with people in it.

Some of those people you will get on with and like, some you won't.

The fact you didn't like this particular dentist is nothing to do with it being 'Oasis'. It's just that particular dentist.

It's always hard when you see somebody for the first time to judge exactly what approach to take. If you see a mouth with problems in it, then you have to get those problems over to the patient and make them realise something needs to be done about them.

Obviously it's much easier to do if you have plenty of time and can introduce things gradually, and explain exactly what you mean. If you're working under time pressures, then it is a lot harder.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I changed dentists after a consultation with an Oasis dentist re. root canal work, not impressed in the slightest, abrupt, unhelpful, came across as couldn't be bothered, esp. when he told me they didn't have the equipment or expertise to do the job and referred me to their private clinic!

when I didn't have an NHS dentist and had to go to an emergency one, it was at oasis, the dentist was the rudest man iv ever met, he hardly said two words to me, it was the dental nurse that did all the speaking. he was just about to start giving me a filling without. even telling me what was the problem or what he was doing, just stuck the drill in my mouth, it was AWFUL. I have a lovely NHS dentist now and would never go back to oasis.

I got the impression Oasis were private. I didn't know they did nhs work.
  • The one and only time I went to Oasis the dentist accused me of being bulimic several times, despite me explaining that I've just always had very weak enamel. I left and will not use them again. I've also put in a complaint.
