Skin care recommendations for older spotty skin

Options
Hi, I wondered if anyone could advise on a reasonably priced skin care routine?
Around 6 months ago, I stopped taking the acne pill, and since then I have morphed into a teenager again (I am the wrong side of 30!). I have got greasy skin, spots and greasy hair!!
Previously I had been using anti aging products, but now my skin has changed, these thick creams seem to sit on my skin making it worse.
I am on a tight budget, and I am already a bit miffed about having to throw away the half used lotions and potions that arent suiting me anymore.
Can anyone suggest a good routine that helps spotty yet ageing skin?

  • I am thirty, and have greasy skin and am prone to breakouts.

I use a face wash for oily/ combination skin (but avoid anything foaming as I find that too drying). I am using a simple 'triple action ' one at the minute that i bought when it was on offer, although I usually use a tesco own one. I am currently using the olay anti wrinkle cream for sensitive skin, it's usually £5 in asda, and i find that's it's quite light and easily absorbed into my skin. I wash and moisturise twice a day, but tend not to use toner.

what are you wearing in the way of make up? I find any foundation, and a BB cream i tried really make my skin extra greasy and give me bad breakouts, so tend not to use these.

I also find keeping my hair off my face helps, as it tends to get greasy too, probably from my skin! Even if i wear my hair down, I clip it back off my face.
  • Boots simply sensitive range has really helped my skin. Although it hasn't got any so called "anti aging" properties, I have found that it doesn't block my pores & it is light weight yet moisturising.

I have also stopped using liquid makeup & now use mineral makeup instead.
  • It's funny you have said that as I have recently bought a bb cream, but stopped using it as I didn't like the finish. I wonder if it has made my skin worse?
  • Well..I have tried bb creams, tinted moisturisers & various foundations & I've always come out in spots.

Someone suggested using mineral makeup instead & I have to say I have had no problems since. After saying that, I have also switched my skin care routine to Boots Simply Sensitve range. Although Simple products will probably be the same.

Only one real issue with using mineral foundation is you can't really use a cream blusher or bronzer. You have to use powder products.
  • Not cheap but I would always use dermalogica, cleanse, tone etc..
Clearing mattifier overnight.. Sheer tint moisture for during the day (i use medium) gives a nice light
Sheer colour with good coverage, then bare minerals powder on top, See if you can buy samples on eBay to try it x
  • Use lemon oil because it can take care of your aging skin without being greasy or putting a thick layer of cream on your skin. Just massaging your face and other body parts with few drops of oil will enough for take care of your skin.

If you do have actual spots, Quinoderm works like magic. However it is quite strong and does contain peroxide, so avoid getting it on your clothes. After saying that, I do use it daily and as soon as I stop the spots are back.

Had acne for 9 years now and don't see it going away any time soon.

My skin is sensitive so I have to be careful what products I use. I used to clean my face with fragrance free wipes then wash with boots simple facial wash and moisturise with aveeno.

Usually found any bars of soap would dry my face out and vaseline and other products made my skin more greasy and red.

However, for the past month I have been using 10% sulphur soap that I found on amazon. Saw the reviews, many people saying it was good for skin conditions and thought I would try it out. It is a little bit expensive around £4-5 I think but it lasts a while.

So far it's a really good product. Skin is smooth and not dry anymore, redness has calmed down dramatically and my sports have cleared up but that may be a mixture of tablets etc.

As for spots I have found that dairy products really make me break out, I have noticed a big difference since cutting down.

Why did you stop taking the pills if they were controlling your acne? My first stop would be the GP for advice on perhaps an alternative treatment, and a referral to a dermatologist, or endocrinologist if the problem is hormonal.

In terms of skincare in the meantime I'd also advise a "Simple" range. Don't use anything to strong or too many products aimed specifically at oily skin as they can strip the oils from the skin prompting the skin to produce yet more. The more natural ingredients the better but this can be difficult on a tight budget. Try to keep your skin as clean as possible, don't touch it too much and cleanse thoroughly morning and evening.

    Good luck :)

Yasmin contraceptive pill, Freederm gel twice a day on the actual spot and no facial products with perfume including foundation.
