Self Certification

Please forgive me, I havent been off sick in a while so am confused.

I have been off since Monday, and do not think I will be well enough to return tomorrow. I am hoping I will be well enough to return after the bank holiday.

My works sickness policy says you can self certify for sicknesses of seven days. Anything more and you have to have a sick note.

Despite me not working the weekend, my employer counts the weekend as included as in that. So Monday would be the 8th day. As this is a Bank Holiday I am not scheduled to work that day anyway.

I just want to know if my assumption is correct that this day will not count towards the sickness and as such Tuesday will be the 8th day, so if I return on that day I will be able to self-certify?

Even though I dont actually work them, my contract does not stipulate that I dont work weekends, so I can kind of understand that these may be included in the sickness, but it does state I do not work Bank Holidays.

Send work a message on Monday saying that you are fit for work. Then take your 7 day self certification in with you on Tuesday. Alternatively, if you are fit, send them a message saying you are fit on Saturday.

But what if I am not off after Monday? I have no choice but to be off on the Monday because it is a Bank Holiday, so if I return on the Tuesday would I not be able to self-certify?

If you are confident of being able to begin work on Tuesday, contact them on Friday afternoon saying you will be ready to return to work on Saturday. (That is assuming they cannot call you in to do work on the Saturday.) Also on Friday post - and get a certificate of posting for - your self-certification form covering the 7 days.

Exactly, Saturday, Sunday and Monday are days you are employed even if you are not actually at work, which is why you need to tell them that you are fit to work on those days, assuming you are.
  • Cheers for all the info. I understand that it just seems strange that the wording of the policy specifically mentions working days - if weekends and bank holidays are included in that (so basically all days are included!) then why not just say days instead of working days!

A self cert covers you for 7 calender days...your first day sick was monday and the 7th day is this sunday. You do include any days you don't usually work including bank holidays. If you go back to work tuesday you will need to speak to your employer with regards to the need for obtaining a sick note for the bank holiday..even though you don't work bank holiday.
