They're unlikely to just accept this with a phonecall to be honest, but you can start a DMP (Debt Management Plan) either through one of the free charities (CCCS or PayPlan) or setting one up yourself.

Also, have a look at the National Debtline website - I think they give you all the info you need if you want to "go it alone". Details are at the top of these boards I think.

Keep posting, and if you can, do a statement of affairs, DFWers might be able to help out some way with the benefit of their experiences.

I think you are better off going through one of the charities as mentioned - when my OH had problems (and was suicidal, that's how I found out he had problems, so I sorted them out for him) none of his creditors wanted to know when I contacted them with offers of token payments (and he was unemployed too - don't get me started on Barclays Bank, loans or credit cards!) but it was an entirely different story when I went through CCCS and could give them a reference number.

    Hi fkelanne :hello:

Firstly well done on posting :T

I doubt very much that your creditors will accept any reduction without you providing a budget plan. They will want to know all your monthly income and expenses.

If I was you I would contact CCCS or PayPlan in the first instance. They offer free advice to people who are unable to pay their debts.

You could also post your SOA on here to see if people can offer advice at ways of cutting down on your expenses. This would free up some money to go towards your debt.

I've just started a DMP with CCCS and two of the banks have accepted the payment proposal already. One has stopped interest for a "temporary period" the other has immediately halved my interest rate. Still waiting to hear about the rest.

CCCS are really good and help you through it all and give lots of advice. You can enter the forms on their website if you don't want to ring them. They will advise the best course to take for your level of income and debt.

I'm not sure to be honest. My debt is a huge amount more than that. :o

    Why not check out https://www.cccs.co.uk?

    fklanne,

Please post details of your debts (creditor, amount, APR) and an SOA (details of your income and outgoings). There are lots of great folks here, some who are used to living on benefits, and they may be able to help you make savings and find more money to pay your creditors.

    Take care.

You can still use CCCS even if you are on benefits and have a small amount of debt.
