Lowell - special offer - 75% off

Options
I received an email today from Lowell offering 75% off an existing debt.

Is this genuine or is there a catch somewhere?

A special offer for you, for a very limited period
To help you clear your debts. We'd like to offer you a discount of 75% off your outstanding balance AND, if you can't afford to pay it all at once, we can even set up a repayment plan and spread out the remaining balance so you can pay monthly.
It really is that simple, just follow these easy steps:
1. Call us on 0113 308 6041 and tell us if you're paying in full or need to spread the payments
2. Make the payment in full or setup a monthly Direct Debit for the instalments
Once the payments have been made the remaining balance will be cleared and the debt will no longer exist.
But, we do need to speak with you in the next 10 days to take advantage of this offer - even if you can't pay immediately. Don't worry, we won't ask you to pay any more, but we do need to update our system to stop any further action.
If you'd prefer, you can even email us at post@lowellgroup.co.uk to tell us how you'd like to pay.
Yours sincerely,
Andrew Bartle

Are you paying anything towards the debt at the moment?

Have you asked them to provide proof/paperwork for the debt and they have been unable to?

Is the debt already statute barred or likely to become statute barred very soon?

    No. The debt is valid.

Ah. Good question. The debt is several years old (can't remember when exactly).

Offering 75% off, you have to suspect there is something seriously wrong with it somewhere.

Statute Barred is when a debtor has not made a payment or acknowledged The debt for 6 years, it then becomes SB, you still owe the money but they cannot get a court order to make you pay it, and if you tell them "I'm not paying it", they tend to go away. It is to prevent ancient "Zombie Debts" clogging up the courts. Once Barred, it cannot become Unbarred.

If its old it might be unenforceable or inflated with unfair charges, which Lowell's know.

Maybe Lowells are short of cash this month? They would still probably make money on what they bought it for even at 25%.

If you have the money and take the offer make sure it is in writing that it is a full and final, balance is zero, won't be chased for the remainder, won't be sold on, will be reported with credit agency as paid etc. etc.

I wrote on the backs of my F and F cheques 'only to be cashed in full and final payment' and in my letters I put if you don't agree with the terms stated by me, send the cheque back.

£50 a month? That needs to be reduced to £1.00..!
