Is there any benefit to finding out which bank has repossessed a property, then apply for the mortgage with them direct?

    No.

    You would still have to go through their status checks, and the property would still have to go through normal conveyencing.

    Yes thanks. I asked my estate agent just because I was being nosey really and they abruptly told me it was non of my business!!
