Hey,
I’m really sorry as I have no idea which board this shouldbe on but hopefully one of you can help!
I have a friend who is moving to the UK in the next fewweeks and is asking me questions about “life” here. They have a job to comeinto and their employer has given them basic information (such as tax, nationalinsurance... work related stuff) but nothing else! I wanted to write a “dummyguide” document that explained life in the UK – for example, he had no ideaabout council tax or the NHS (What charges he should pay etc)
So... cheating a bit – is there a dummy guide out theresomewhere already? If not, what sort of things should i put in this?! HE doesn’thave children (so thankfully i don’t need to explain tax credits etc!) but he is married, his wife only has a 6 month visa for visiting the UK at the moment,i know she wont be covered under the NHS but is there anything about cost fortreatment etc?!
Thanks in advance!

Where is your friend moving from, meaning EU or non EU?0

I would have though the UK Borders Agency would be a good starting point for some basic information, although it probably won't go to the level of payment for NHS treatment.

Non-EU
I've started to copy and paste various info from the UK Gov website. This is what i have so far:
Info on:
National Insurance
Income Tax & Tax Codes
Working Tax Credits
Child Tax Credits (Not relevant at the moment but for future maybe?)
Child Benefit (Not relevant at the moment but for future maybe?)
Healthcare / NHS Charges + Dentist
TV Licences
Council Tax
Recycling
Driving
UK Bank Holidays
Not really sure what else to put in
Thanks!

Has he thought about opening a bank account?
It is likely to be difficult with no credit history or proof of address and paying from a foreign account will be difficult (and expensive) for things like council tax and utility bills (you also didn't mention those or where he is going to live - unless employer is sorting that)0 -
ooh yes - sorry his employer has already organised the relevant info for him to do this but thanks!
He will be staying in his employers accommodation (They have a flat on site) and his "rent" includes the council tax etc, until he finds his own accommodation.0 -
Although rather heavy on the education side, there's a lot of good information in the British Council's guide.
