I think it's more the case with salaried employees rather than hourly paid staff. My sister was salaried still is for all I know and her hr department said any extra hours she worked was already figured into her salary, she successfully appealed and eventually got an extra couple of grand a year to cover any extra hours.

My contracted hours are 9-5.30 but you'll regularly find me in the office between 7.30am and 6pm. It's just the done thing, always has been.
That's why companies make people do it cause people do so it!

They only do overtime as there is too much work and not enough people or certain people can not do their jobs (not all staff just some)

I have only ever done over time once when the printer went down as we all worked to deadlines and we had the right amount of staff to do the work and to do it well.

  • I dont think its classed as overtime. My old contracted hours were 9-5 but was told team hours 8-6 and contract states you get the work done rather than clock watch. I often had to do longer hours as staff got made redundant and had to cover their work, this is absolutely standard practise in some industries. You can always refuse, but guess who will be first in line when further redundancies? I eventually left as doing 60-70 hours weeks and job of three people. At that stage everyone was annoyed and we staged a mass revolt to force hire of new person! Side note, my friend working for government accrues lieu time for even 1 minute past her schedule. If you don't like it go back to public sector.

    Welcome to the board.

I am not sure why you are being rude to the OP though ?
  • I would suggest that you politiley ask if you should be putting your actual finishing time down on your timesheet.

This is exactly it, and it's a catch 22 situation. This happens to salaried staff because employers KNOW that they can get more hours out of people, without paying extra.

It works. Employees want to impress, so they stay longer. It reinforces the employer's theory, and they don't need to hire anyone new. So, there's even more work, and more of a need to stay late.

What it needs is for EVERYONE to take a stand and only work their contracted hours, which would never happen. People feel obligated to stay behind, judged if they don't, and ultimately are taken advantage of. Some people don't mind, others do.

I wasn't meaning to be rude. I'm just sayin in the current climate the employers hold the power and unfortunately in a lot of industries it is standard to work "overtime" whereas I understand it is the opposite in govt departments. Some people just prefer the certainty of one style of working, personal preference. Please dont take offence, this is just my experience!

Yes I worked with two people who used to work at their previous jobs together and near on 200 staff would stay till 7pm each day. I said they were silly and they said what could they have done, to which I replied 'all get up at 5.35pm and go home' :)

Only then will the company say 'oh I think we need more staff'

Each person who does 2 hours a day overtime on say £25k a year saves the co near on £6650 so if there was 200 people doing the same on average it could save them well over £1million!!!!

In the past overtime was a rare thing for me, a few times per year if we were really busy and it was only the odd hour, and even that was a struggle for me as I just wanted home, I work to live not the other way about.

Then I got made redundant, I was unemployed for 4-5 months before getting my current job, on day 1 I got asked if I could do overtime, I laughed as I thought it was a joke but it wasn't, so to keep on the right side of them I said I'd do an hour, that wasn't good enough, 3 hours they were looking:eek: I almost !!!!! my pants to be frank, I said no, of course it wasn't long before I ended up in the office over it as we have a sneaky overtime clause hidden in our contracts. Its a rare week goes past I don't do at least 2-4 hours overtime and I hate it with a passion.
