This was fascinating. I just had a little bit of a surf, and came across the site's own definition of what external debt is:
"This entry gives the total public and private debt owed to nonresidents repayable in foreign currency, goods, or services".
So its public AND private, but it only covers whats owed to nonresidents of the UK, and not in sterling, as far as I can make that out. And the site also describes it as being in the trillions. I think I may have to bookmark the CIA! How amazing.

Yes, it's a drop in the ocean. We should all get together and try and push our debt levels to the max so that we can get into that No 1 spot!

From the look of it, and the definition, it's probably only the footprint of the yen "carry trade". It certainly isn't a "nett debt" thing, or neither Japan nor China would be on there.

There are currently $415 trillion of derivatives outstanding. It's risen by a quarter in the last year - i.e. by about $100T. Just for comparison, private debt in this country is about £1.3T or $2.6T.

It's quite a lot of money...
