i had not so good experience at the local butchers yesterday.
For the last 2 visits that i was served by the supposed middle aged saturday assistant he had made errors in the reckoning up. i then decided to try whenever possible to avoid saturdays!
Yesterday i had to go in and imagine my horror when i realised that he was in line to serve me, but i was ready!
i calculated the 3 items in my head as he weighed them and i literally could not believe my ears as he had overpriced me again this time by almost 30%!
In front of everyone i asked him if the price was correct.
He said "Yes"
Twice more clearly and slowly i asked him to "try Again"
He did it on paper this time and said "Oh" How much did i say ?
the other assistant and boss and a crowded shop all heard the dialogue and i was not a happy bunny !
i have a good mind to go in and speak to them about as i suspect im not the only one.

How wonderful - I wish mine did that.
I love my butchers , but the green grocers next door to him sells veg that doesn't look a fresh as waitrose, doesn't last nearly as long & costs about the same amount.0 -
I am so lucky where I live I not only have a great butcher who sells locally produced meat of really good quality, I also have a fresh wet fish shop and also a great greengrocer. He will cut a cabbage in half to sell to pensioners who perhaps only want half of one. Also on a Monday morning left over fruit & veg from Saturday he will sell off at reduced prices.I have often bought slightly bruised apples in there that were excellent for pies once peeled at half the price. The fishmonger is a lovely chap and will tell you whats good value and whats in 'season' In fact he will chat about fish all day long if you let him
:) There is a Greggs opened up in my tiny area but I only will go in there to buy a couple of rolls for my DGS as they like a bacon roll when they come to my house after school on Wednesdays (their brother has a football club so we pick him up at 4.30) I prefer Burgen bread which I buy a loaf of once a week from the small Icelands for a pound and freeze what I don't need.I don't eat a lot of bread anyway so its not a problem.
I do like the butchers though as he does have the odd special offer of mince or made-on-the- premises sausages which are lovely. He will also do you a bag of bones for making stock for about 50p.At Christmas the queue from the shop stretches down the road from just after 7 in the morning..They do open early, but close around 4 in the afternoon and the place is spotless and the chaps in there scrub it down every afternoon before closing.I have lived here almost 19 years and have never had any thing bad from there, they also sell local free range eggs as well for £1.20 for 6 and they are huge. There shop is opposite a Tesco Metro shop but its never had a problem with the supermarket as the products in the butchers and greengrocers are so good
P.S. about five minutes walk away there is also an old fashioned ironmongers who will sell you nails or screws individually.I have taken a saucepan lid in there and the chap has replaced the knob on it and tighened it up for me for the cost of just the knob and a screw. The shop even smells like an ironmongers used to.Great place and the chaps in there are lovely and will help anyone with any sort of problem when it comes to DIY.far more personal service than you'd get at B&Q and at half the price0 -
There used to be threads running on living without supermarkets, some interesting reading:

I've been trying this lately, we don't have a green grocer so I do end up visiting Tesco or Co-op.
I really like going to our butchers they are friendly and helpful, I try to stick to a budget thinking about what I can get in the 3 for £10 at Tesco, some items are more expensive but others comparable, always much tastier.
The baker I sometimes go to is part of a chain but nicer than supermarket bread, it would be nice to have the time to make my own.
Also, I hate cooking but do make my own cheese sauce, burgers and pizza!:Dnew challenge?£1 a day for Christmas 2024 £367 / £366 ~Got married 24/05/19 ~ Credit CardDFW Nerd #1155 ~LBM 25/2/09 ~ Debt at highest £8,037.35 ~ £00 -
