Keeping grated cheddar?

I have a packet of cheddar I want to grate myself and keep in a Tupperware box in the fridge. Anyone know how long will it be good for once grated?

freeze it and it'll keep ages. it should last a week at least just in the fridge but if it is to be used in cooked or packed lunches items just freeze it.

Thanks. I want to have some handy for the kids (teens) to make themselves toasted panini after school. They won't bother if they have to grate it themselves, lazy so and so's!

as above, freeze it. i buy mine when YS grate it and freeze it.lasts ages

As pigpen suggested, I always grate and freeze a large block which usually works out cheaper. I fill a small margarine size tub from it and keep that filled up in the fridge. Might be an idea for the kids' panini?

I find grated cheese goes off within a few days in the fridge. And if anyone else grates their own here they make an awful mess! Grate it, freeze it in portion-sized bags.(they can still make a mess here when you grate it for them!!!)

I use frozen grated cheese on pizzas all the time; it works just fine.

I too grate cheese but usually only enough to fill one of those plastic chinese rice take-away boxes.The rest of the chunk I leave wrapped up in foil in the fridge.If I buy a big block I will divide it into three and wrap in foil and freeze so I only get a third of a block out at a time.I adore cheese and its my one 'sin' that i would find difficult to do without.In my fridge at the moment I have a chunk of mexicana peppery cheese,a small piece of Rocquefort,some with garlic and herbs in, a chunk of double gloucester,some brie and a piece of strong 'mousetrap cheese.I also have a box of Philli type cheese as well.:):):)I find cheese so versatile and you can make it into almost anything and a sprinkle of parmesan on top of even the most basic spag turns it into something delicious

I think I have probably ate at least most of them at some point :):)

yes.. they are toasted so it will defrost quickly.
