Ex employer has offered 100% incentive to leave company scheme

My other half worked for a company for 2-3 yrs and had a non contributory pension scheme and accrued a pension fund of close to £10k in the time.
The employer is now offering her a transfer value of £20k to leave the scheme (plus £1k cash).
We'll probably take up the offer but wondering what the options are for transferring the £20k. Someone at work mentioned a self managed fund?

Main decision for opting out is that we'd rather have control of the pension than leave it where it is. We already have a substantial pension between us.

Just looking for some general advice before further research.

Thanks
