Debt Collection Agencies Chasing Me for Unknown Debt

In 2011 I started getting phone calls from Mackenzie Hall with a recorded message to call them re a "personal matter". I did not respond & then received a letter with the same message which I also ignored. Then they sent a letter demanding over £300 owed to their client & threatening legal action if I did not pay it within 7 days. They named the original creditor who was unknown to me. As I was sure the debt was not mine I again did not reply. I had not heard anything for nearly 2 years but this week I received a letter from another debt collection agent called Tocatto demanding the same amount & naming the same creditor - a catalogue company.
I know these debt collection companies buy-up old debts & try to intimidate anyone with a similar name or who may have lived at the same address as the debtor.
Should I continue to ignore these demands or send them a letter demanding proof of the debt?

You could ignore it but getting calls is a real pain so you could try the prove it letter, its on one of the sticky threads, I think its the third one from the top, make sure you mention about harassment being an offence! That should make them go away.

There is also a really good one on the legal beagles site that mentions 'vexatious harassment' and threatens immediate litigation to sue for harassment.

Thanks. If Tocatto continues to chase me for this debt I'll send them a "prove it" letter.

I would just send the prove it letter straight away don't wait and see what they will do. They will phone and write letters which can be harassing to say the least.
