Can sold on debt incur new default

I have a debt that default in 2001 for £180.
Recently i signed up to equifax and checked my report - they have the same debt listed with a debt collection agency and they have recorded a new default in 2008 against the same debt.
The original debt has long since dissapeared from my report (2007) but unfortunately since 2008 the debt collection company have had it defaulted again.
I called them and they said this is correct.
Is it?
If so this means companies can buy and sell the same debt forever?
If not, how can i get it removed immediately?

A default should only be registered once.0

Yes can only be recorded once. We have just won case against Barclays with help from Ombudsman. They filed two defaults instead of one, we have one and they had to pay compensation £150. Complain and contact credit reference agency to make a note that one default is under investigation0

Great, so the have no legal right to do that. I have called them and they are going to 'look in to it'. How quickly can i demand this is taken off?0

A company has eight weeks to resolve your complaint before you can complain to the financial ombudsman unless you get a final response before that amount of time.
If you tell them you'll be complaining to the ombudsman if they haven't resolved your complaint within eight weeks they might be more inclined to assist. What will your verse be?
