Tesco Express Computers for schools

Not sure if this is nationwide but went into my local Tesco Express (small local shop type Tesco) in Buckinghamshire and they give out a computers for schools voucher for every £5 spent as opposed to £10 in normal Tesco's. They even have it printed on all the literature ie: posters etc. so it's not just a mistake.

As an aside I was in my big Tesco last week and a man on the opposite checkout, when offered the vouchers said 'No thanks' but then asked the lady next to him in the queue if she would like them. The checkout operaters said they had been told by management that this was no longer to be allowed. They were not allowed to get involved ie: handing the voucher to the next customer. If the customer wanted to do this then the had to give the voucher to the other customer personally.... how mean!

This has always been tesco official policy, most checkout staff just ignore it! (I'm a tesco manager by the way)

  • It's not the case in my local tesco (Barnt green, Nr. Bromsgrove). They have a box behind the tills that any unwanted vouchers get put in for the local school... and the staff just put them in if you say you don't want them...

The offer is crap unless you can collect in mass quantities so I think they should help out... You need thousands of vouchers to get anything decent...

On sunday in our tescos i was with my sister shopping and she is a teacher. IMy shopping went through and i got 2 vouchers i gave them to my sister. As i was packing my sisters bags for her down the belt came the booklet with all the vouchers in. I just couldn't help it i put them in with the shopping. My sister just gave me the eye. When the checkout operator came to give my sister her voucher she looked for the book, couldn't find it and took another load out of a box. when we got home we counted them 82 there were. My sister said that you need loads to get anything. About 150 of them will give you a disc for a programe. So at this point i did not feel guilty.

You do need a lot of vouchers for anything decent (about 12000 for a pc), but it is worth it - I'm a network manager in a comprehensive school and each year we get enough vouchers for a pc and usually a digital camera too (and there are 2 other main schools in the town), it does take a while to count them (but thats what detentions are for ;) ).

I witnessed a two-year-old or so baby girl making eyes, smiling and playing peekaboo with the cashier in a way so cute that after the cashier dispensed to the paying parent two vouchers he then just handed over the entire pad. It may take a lot of vouchers to get good stuff, but remember that at any school, there are many parents doing many shops so what seems like a trickle to one household's chancellor of exchequer is exponentially compounded when dozens of family shopping sprees associated with a particular school occur every day or week. And compared to store chains that give nothing to schools, who can complain?
