There is a lot of information online about the length of time he was Manager, according to other sources it indicates that he was Manager for 27 years:
Source (Daily Mail):
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2321824/Sir-Alex-Ferguson-retires-Manchester-United-manager-10-longest-serving-
Source (Independent):
http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/sir-alex-ferguson-latest-manager-retires-but-will-remain-a-director-of-club-after-27-years-in-charge-of-manchester-united-8606905.htmlbosses-stayed-year.html
There are more that suggest that it is 27 years. (Personally I prefer the answer from the Independent as Wikipedia isn't always 100% reliable, I'm putting 27 years) However the BBC are saying 26, which is confusing, and other sources are mentioning 26 and half years. Conflicting information regarding this. but I'm going for 27 years.
I hope this information helps!

In total he's been in charge around 26.5 years, but I'd go with 27 as per Rikmano above since he took over in 1986.More GRRR than the average Bear!!0

It may be a bit pedantic but if I was 26.5 years old (I wish!)I could not say I'm 27 as I hadn't yet had my 27th birthday. So on that basis I would say the answer should be 26, but this competition seems to be so badly written it could be either.
I'm going for 26 though.Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0
