Tax Allowances

Maybe its just my poor searching skills but I can't find a relevant answer on the site at the moment.

I work for the Police Service, and was recently advised that I am entitled to a 'boot allowance' of roughly eighty pounds per year.
I have called my local tax office and they have amended my tax code accordingly.

Having never heard of this allowance before, I decided to google the term 'tax allowance' to see which other allowances you can receive.
However, this has brought nothing up, not even the boot allowance.

Does anyone know anymore on this subject?

Don't the police authority pay this "boot allowance" directly to you rather than it being a tax allowance? When I was in the police, we used to claim a fixed amount every year on our expenses called "boot allowance", and the employer paid it to us, nothing at all to do with the tax authority. May have changed now I suppose - it is a decade or two later!!!!

The standard flat rate expenses for police officers is currently £55/year, and police civilians such as traffic wardens, PCSOs, etc can claim £45/year.

However, some forces have 'local agreements' where their staff can claim relief on a larger amount. I'm not sure but I believe West Yorkshire officers can claim relief on £110/year. Some others automatically give further relief at source.
