Researching family tree in Northern Ireland?

Having a bit of a hard time with this, Apart from the 1911 Census from the National Archives I can't find any more information online in regards to births,deaths,marriages etc everything seems to be held at the public records office in Belfast.

Am I missing something? Can this be done without trotting down to the PRO? There are sites like ancestry etc but don't want to sign up unless they are useful.

You can hire a computer for the day in the General Register Office, Oxford House, Chichester Sreet in Belfast to look up indexes for births, deaths and marriages from 1864 to present.
Not free though, £14 to hire computer per person for the day with 2 free verifications, any extra are £4.00 each. All records for Northern Ireland held there.
The records not online yet but should be next year if you want to search at home, but will have to pay also.
