Apparently it congeals and then this is when it makes the drum smell. You should really try keeping the drum clean if possible to reduce smells, rinse through with white vinegar from time to time if achievable and keep the draw as clean as possible. I've actually never used vinegar yet though was advised to do a rinse with an empty drum using a mug of soda crystals every now and then on the hottest temperature as this should keep the pipes clear apparently, advised by guy from Candy. I have to say, I don't do this very often though used to do this every month and do try keeping the draw clean now and again when I get the chance when any powder appears to solidify.0

Laundry liquids contain no bleach - laundry bleaches are not stable in liquids, only in powders. So liquids will never keep your whites particularly white, although neither will they cause colour loss in the same way that some powders can.
But the real problem with the absence of bleach is that that laundry liquids allow mould and bacteria to grow in the washing machine sump, where traces of soap remain between washes. This is why they cause smelly drums. I suspect that is also why they are far more strongly scented than powders, to try to cover up the bad smells.
If you want to use a liquid then it is easy to keep a drum clean by using a powder every other wash, and by doing a very hot 95 degree wash - with powder of course - at least once or twice a month. I do tea towels, towels and pure cotton sheets in a 95 degree wash and it keeps my washing machine sweet as a nut!
I have heard -also from a washing machine repair man - that laundry liquids also congeal in drains and block them.0
