Can I be made to have an appraisal with no notice?

This ^^^^
As you started working for them in October 2012, you have to work for them for two years (less one week)before you have any employment rights. During that time they can dismiss you for any reason or no reason at all, and they do not have to follow any formal disciplinary procedures.
The exception to this is if the reason for dismissal amounts to unlawful discrimination, in which case you have protection from day 1.
So in your situation I would knuckle down and do your best to meet their requirements. The issue of whether you are entitled to be given notice of a meeting is a red herring when they could dismiss you the next day with no come back if they so wish.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
I'd look for another job if I were you, it sounds like your days are numbered whatever you do.0
