can an employer make deductions for training??

Hi All,

I currently work for G4S as an SIA security steward in events. Around 12 months ago G4S paid for the SIA course which I completed and passed,At the beginning of the course I signed an agreement to say if I left within 3 years of doing this course I would have to pay a percentage of the cost of training depending on how long I had been working for them .
I still work for them some 15 months later but I have now recieved a letter saying they are deducting the cost of the training from my salary for the next 3 months I have NOT left the company and I feel I should not be paying back the cost of this course. Could anybody offer some help with this as I'm sure its not correct what they have done.
:(
regards a disgruntled security steward !!!
