First lot of roofers visited yesterday and they said they could see daylight round two of our chimneys. That is why it is leaking! Will await their quote but I am not expecting it to be cheap. Payday yesterday so moved money around and sent £400 to the cc, with the hope that I could send another £100 if all goes to plan. It seems crazy to be paying off the cc when we have a roof to fix but the 0% deal ends in Dec so it needs to be gone as I do not want to do a balance transfer and incur a fee. The roof money will just have to be borrowed from the husbands tax fund if needed and then we can pay it back. Not sure how he is doing it but husband has saved another £700 this month. He is only buying fuel and that is it, I wish I had his will power.

Finally finished the 3 aprons for the neices, £3 each it came too so hope they like them. I am also going to include a handwritten recipie that I was given from my Nana, thought it would make it very personal. Finally paid off all I owed from the cc, really pleased. The remaining amount is going to be paid from the joint account. Working at home last week means I still have a full tank. I think my car is feeling lonely. It is making a Huge difference to the petrol budget. Also stayed away from the supermarket this week, so will need to be inventive for meals.

  • Picked up a few more Xmas presents this week. Doing well and coming in on budget or just under. Managed the week with no supermarket shop and spent £3 on essentials. Off to the supermarket now and have £27 food budget left. I should do it just need to stick to the list. Paid some more off the cc so it now stands at £2557. Roofer coming on mon weather permitting so that will halt any more debt repayments.

  • Food shop was a respectable £24 and there was a great Bayliss and Harding gift set half price at £6 so another Xmas present done. Roofer not showed today as it is raining, the bit that annoyed me the most is that they did not contact to say so. It only takes a text, but it would have been appreciated. Husband and I have a day off together which is amazing. We are currently sorting through our stuff and there is more going out than staying. It is great as the house was feeling a little stretched. Not that it is a major issue but before Xmas I like to sort stuff out otherwise Xmas comes and you have things everywhere with lots of visitors! Pile for selling has been restocked, so hopefully that will help pay for Xmas a bit. I have whittled my list down to immediate family and one friend. Sounds bad but so many of my friends were relieved when I suggested stopping the presents. They were obviously in the same situation with money but did not know how to sort it. It has taken a few years and now with new friends I just do not start.

No food shop again this week. Also will be away with work for most of the week so heating and food costs will be saved. Went into town yesterday for the first time in a long time. Managed to pick up some Xmas presents at a very reduced price in a sale. 2 out of 4 items are currently sold, I hope they pay quickly otherwise I will have to take them with me on my work trip! Only £105 spent on fuel this month, normal spend is £300! Extra saving is helping buy Xmas presents and pay off the debt. Only 2 weeks to pay day and then I can see how much I can send to the cc. Roofer paid which was frustrating as that would have made a significant impact on our debt. I guess I should be glad that we have the monthly surplus in the joint account to cover it.

Does anyone know about single person discount and council tax. My husband lives away and only come back once a week, sometimes only for 12 hours (he works weekends as well). Would I be eligible for the reduction? Do not want to claim something I am not entitled too, but how do the councils police it? When I was single the council never checked it.

    Hi

I would suggest you ring the council and ask them, just don't give too many personal details.

    Good luck

Some councils will offer the discount if he's paying council tax at another address. It's worth asking.

  • Well today was exciting, I cleared the cc!! A great feeling to get it gone but it has cleared us out. Now I am awaiting the cc company to update my account, even though I know it got there straight away the online statement takes a few days to show any payments. Once i can see a zero balance then I will be able to breath a little easier. However now the hard task of making sure will start to build up some savings. We have a big bill to pay in June for our annual oil delivery so need at least that plus some buffer. The roof leaking recently made me more nervous about not having an emergency stash. Again we are lucky we have a monthly surplus in the joint account, but that is not a lot so need a few calm months to let that build up. Need to go and readjust the s/s to see what is next to attack.
