Qualified electrician wanting to register as self employed.

Hi I'm a qualified electrician who has been working for the same company for 8 years and was with another company previously for two years.
Although I don't have a problem with my current employer he is working for a big company on salary and is keeping his company going in case. The thing is work is fading away and my employer doesn't seem interested in chasing more. People are however offering me work, Up to now I have passed the work on to my boss but he doesn't seem interested.
My question is that I have decided that I should register as self employed as well as work for my current employer. I just need to find out what I need to do this or if I can do this?
All help will be fully appreciated, thank you.

Check your contract of employment to make sure there are no clauses stopping you from setting-up in competition. If there are none, then feel free to pop over to the HMRC website & register as self-employed.
The guy above me is a sparkie & worked for a couple of large firms before going s/e. His previous employers now sub work out to him when they are overloaded with contracts.Never Knowingly Understood.

No I know for a fact there is nothing like that on my contract.0

There isn't really anything big you need to do. If your contract allows for you to accept outside work then:
1. Say yes to people that offer you the work
2. Register as self employed and file a tax return every year which is super easy
3. Get paid!
That's it, nothing complicated
