Dear MSE's...
Please help me know what I should do.
My dad moved to Florida a few years ago, and asked me if it would be ok to use my address to get his UK cedit card statments sent to nd I could forward them on.
This was fine until his wife left him and she stopped making the payments to the cards - she was in charge of the finances.
He has missed a load of payments and today he got a default notice to my address...
I'm absolutly beside myself... I am little miss good credit and have only ever missed one or two payments in my life - by accident due to holidays etc...
I feel like this is going to ruin all my hard work....
Please tell me what this means for me and will I be ruined forever?
Thanks in advance for all the fab advise I hope to recieve
Simonne

Debt now applies to the individual - not the address. Get a copy of your credit reference report and check your father is not associated with you. If he is, ask for his removal as he emigrated in xxxx.
In future, return all his post (unopened) marked - not at this address, please remove from mailing list.
You will have some issues because (presumably) you share surnames(?)

WOW... Thank you for your quick reply...
Yes we do share surnames... I was going to look into a dissassociation.. but I sometimes have to transfer money over to him.. will this have to stop to do the dis-association?0 -
No. The companies are likely to ask for a forwarding address tbh and moving abroad doesn't mean he isn't liable for the debts.
Without wishing to sound rude, does he know of the debts? Has he since cancelled the credit cards, etc? He should really be dealing with this himself, not leaving you with the consequences - does he have an income?

Sorry I have made him sound like a total loser.. he moved his business to the states, and is fully aware of the debits and is not in any way trying to shirk the responsibility of paying them...
The buseinss has been fine and profitable it's just that my step mother (yes the evil kind - lol) has been taking profits out of the joint business account and this has meant that there hasn't been funds to make payments,
He has since restriced her access to these accounts but has been left in a total mess as a consiquence..
He has been nieve thinking that his wife would keep up her duties of running the company books and not skimming money out of the accounts.0 -
Well, I guess we all know someone in a similar position to your father.
As long as he hasn't left you high and dry, I would advise you look at your credit file, check he isn't on there and then send back post as advised with "not known at this address".
If his creditors start pursuing you, you need to look on here for templates asking for proof of debt - this may happen as you share surnames.
Good luck!
