Hi OP,
I'm in a similar position, and I am of the opinion that the only option for me is to work for myself.
Thats the easy bit! Now to decide on doing what...?:(

Not all businesses start with money, just need to know what and where and have teh gumption to give it a go.

Starting your own business in this climate with no prior buisness experience, no clear idea of what your going to do and no clear skills. Not a very good idea really. Small businesses are going under every day plus banks dont want to do any lending etc.
Also loads of people are doing window cleaning, ironing, private cleaning, dog walking, pet sitting etc. So if you do any of these then you will have all the competition from them.
What about joining an agency which deals with support staff in schools? Also do some voluntering in an area your interested in and and update your computer skills etc. Then hopefully you will have a reference and more upto date skills and experience.0 -

I never said it was easy but at the end of the day if you are not happy being paid what an employer wishes to pay then you either have to move to a different job paying more, be your own boss or accept that the market is dictating this is what you are worth.
As some motivation not all businesses fail but you need to put the time and effort in to making them work. Just today there is this article on two inspirational blokes.

So do lots of people but it doesn't mean they'll get it.
In my last job I earned LESS than the NMW and had to work longer hours to earn it too. I still did the job though as I needed something coming in.
Only reason I had to leave was because of health grounds and yet another boss who refused to take it seriously and made life hell for me. The job itself though was very enjoyable (without the boss) and despite the low crappy pay, I genuinely enjoyed it because I met a lot of people and got out and about a lot.0
