NI Class 2 Contributions?!

Hi all - I am full time employed and obviously pay my National Insurance contributions through this. I also do a small amount of self employed photography work on the side and HMRC are also asking me for NI contributions through this too. Is this right? Many thanks!

Of course it's right, why do you think it wouldn't be?

NI for self employed works a bit different to NI for employed. Employed NI starts after earnings go above a certain threshold, you do not have to do anything your employer works it out. With self employed NI there is again a threshold but it is optional if you are below the threshold and wish to pay NI you do not need to do anything other than pay up as and when required. If you are below the threshold you have to get an exemption certificate and then you do not pay any NI on your self employed earnings.

The current figure for low earnings exemption is £5725 and the details for applying are here....
