Transferring your children's school..

Has anyone done this for primary school age?
My form got submitted last Wednesday. I have applied to transfer schools to closer to where the children live. (Though will still be by the same council).
Is there anything I should do in the meantime? How long do they usually take?
In realistic terms how long am I looking at for my child to stay at the same school whilst they try and find one near us? (I am trying to figure out whether its better to buy a weekly bus pass rather than monthly if it may happen quite soon).
Also... is there any help for second hand uniform or uniform grants until I am able to provide new uniforms at the new school?
I have never done this before so feeling a little lost.

Do you know if the school you requested actually have spaces? I believe that if there is, it is up to the school to decide when the move could take place. They usually like to do transfers at the end of terms to help with the transition.
If however there are no space, then the best that can happen is they are put on the waiting list. How long it would take for your child to reach the top depends on where she is on the waiting list, how big the school is and how often children tend to move.
I would call your council to ask the above. If your application has been passed to the school I would contact them directly to ask for a meeting to discuss the move.0 -
It is a busy time for school admissions as they are currently sorting the September intake. Some schools have second-hand uniform shops run by the PTA. You could ring the school you are interested in moving to and asking them if they have one and also if they have spaces in the year group you need.0

Around here you do the leg work. Visit the school you would like, see if they have spaces, then fill in the form, get it signed by your current school.
Have you contacted your preference school?0 -
Wouldn't it be easier to transfer your child rather than their school

How long is a piece of string?
Have you requested specific schools, or just one in your area.
If specific ones they have to have a space first and if they are ones you want to go to probably everyone else does too so there will likely be a waiting list.
If they are just in your area and no specific request of school, you are likely to get one sooner, although you are likely to get a lower Ofsted resulting school as they tend to be undersubscribed.
Speak to the Council first to see if they have your form and if there is any free space in the local schools.
When you are assigned a school speak with the school office and ask if there is any second hand uniform. Most schools do generic uniform you can pick up cheaply in supermarkets.
Communication is key to everything, build up a rapport with the people and you will be kept in the loop and you will get those answers from them.0
