Hi

I was looking around and the old metal cassette boomboxes like JVC sell for a fair bit. What's so special about them? I mean who on earth uses cassettes these days?

Don't know, there seems to be something trendy about cassettes right now. No idea why, I mean they did the job of music storage when only cassettes & vinyl were available, but why you'd want to go back to them now, I haven't a clue.
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.

Anyone who has a cassette collection of any size will need a player for them.

I've got hundreds of cassettes that simply aren't available anywhere in any commercial form on other formats - radio broadcasts, live concerts and the like, so I need cassette deck(s) to play them.

Maybe it is just a trend thing. People will claim it is for the quality but I have no understanding of why anyone still uses vinyl now - particularly if they were not around before the age of CDs / tapes. A large "boombox" must be just for show when you can save yourself a lot of lifting with a nano music player or whatever. I saw quite a good device recently that converts cassettes to mp3s, so they can't use the excuse that they have a large cassette collection. :P

People will still use vinyl if they have a vinyl collection of any size, and they have no desire, nor the time, to convert it.

Many use vinyl because, in many cases, it's superior to other formats. Records that were pressed before the digital age command high prices for certain artists, because they're pure analogue pressings, and haven't been sullied by digital remastering.

Early Led Zeppelin pressings can easily fetch £200 to £300 at the moment, if in good condition. One recent example sold for over £900.

Sure, who needs that Mona Lisa and all those big, heavy paintings cluttering up the galleries. Let's photograph them with a compact digi camera, and post 10x8 prints on the walls, then we can throw the paintings out and make the gallery smaller... Nobody will notice the difference, will they?

Sorry, I typed that post on my iPhone. My parents are gradually getting rid of their cassettes and replacing them with cheap CDs from That's Entertainment. They pay £5 for 3 or 6 CDs. There is a TE in Crystal Peaks shopping centre, 2 miles from where my grandmother lives.
