When to register self employed after ssp?

I've been signed off for 5 months with stress and depression and recieving SSP. The note I am currently on ends may 31st. I do not wish to claim more time off. I have accepted that returning to my very stressful job (talking life and death type job) may not be an option for the forseeable future and as I was employed on a casual basis there may not be any shifts for me as I have been out of the loop so long.
So to try an alternative I would like to go self employed(which I can do whilst staying attatched to my current job just in case). I know I have three months to register by. My question is, as I started to buy stock to prepare, I cannot register yet as self employed whilst I am recieving SSP can I? Hubby suggested keeping receipts for tax purposes but I dont think this will work as I am "unfit to work" so could not rightly register a self employed business untill June? I do not plan to start working until June but I need this stuff in now to be ready.
Also as he is self employed, can we still use the same bank account if I pay in my earnings. They would be very small for at least a few years so I am not expecting to earn enough even to pay tax yet.
