You are single with no dependants
You are 40 years old
You own a house with no mortgage
You have no debts
You receive an income from savings/rent which provides a comfortable living
You don't spend the income you receive from your job
This is the position I am in, what would you do ? Would you continue to work, take time out to pursue personal interests ? Start a business ? Retire ? I would welcome any comments. Personally I am contemplating giving up work for good !

Do you enjoy your job?Would it bother you to walke up every morning with nothing to do all day? Do you have plenty of other interests outside work?
Retirement is clearly an option, but some people find it throws up problems of its own.Trying to keep it simple...0 -

Do I Enjoy my job ? No, hate it - but I used to love it, & I am aware my challenge is to find plenty of other interests as I have no intention of doing nothing all day - I just figured I should take time out & see how I get on & if I get really really bored then I may look for employment to keep me occupied & for some social activity.0 -
Having got the financial side sorted, looks like you need to spend some time figuring out what else you want to do with your lifeTrying to keep it simple...0

you are in a great position!
although not in as good a financial position as yourself, I intend to stop work soon and travel throughout Europe full time.
don't see why you should carry on working in a job you don't enjoy anymore.
as stated by Ed you need to get your ideas together first,
volunteering might appeal
politics
travel
futher education
i'd suggest you don't give up the day job till you have something to fill the time0 -

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
Can you take longer holidays by 'buying' weeks off (i.e. unpaid holiday) - if so, there must be places you're dying to see - Rome, Thailand, sounds like the world's your oyster.0

Reminds me of Mark "Rent-boy" Renton:
Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a big television, Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Choose fixed- interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose a three piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who you are on a Sunday morning. etc etc Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons.

Take up golf/fishing/windsurfing/skiing/snowboarding/gliding/diving/cycling with lessons from an expensive professional(s).
Fly to Beijing/Manhattan/Mexico City/Sydney, take a taxi to a 5* city centre hotel, (Hyatt on 5th and Park) take a subway/taxi for 5 miles and walk back to your hotel, order lobster thermador retire for the evening with a 7* brandy. If it takes a man a week to walk to walk a fortnight how long does it take a fly with tackity boots on to walk through a barrel of treacle?0
