How much to spend on 5 year old niece?

Hello all,

We have a niece that turns 5 in a few weeks and my GF has found a present for her but it is 30 pounds. It is a toy, which I do know she will like but for how long? We dont have children ourselves so Im not sure how long it will keep the occupied before they get bored and never play it again

Is this too much to spend on a 5 year old? I know no one in my family has ever spent that on a niece or nephew, but we aren't from the most affluent of backgrounds.

I am also concerned that it may be more than the parents would spend as things are also tight for them.

Or am I being silly/too tight?

Thanks.

If you're happy to spend that much on something she will like, go for it, kids get bored with toys really quickly anyway, whatever you get!

If you like it and think your niece will like it, and you can afford it - then do it, and enjoy giving the gift.

But if you can't afford it or think it may hurt her parents or your parent's feelings then perhaps you have to tactfully step in and suggest something cheaper.

Personally, we tend to spend about £5 to £10 on nieces and nephews. Might stretch to a little more if they have definite wants when they are older, which are fairly sensible.
This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
    Fingers crossed x

Have you asked the parents what they think she might like? I think that is quite a lot of money to spend on a 5 year old but it might be worth finding out what toys she likes playing with at the moment.

Perhaps if you want to spend that much, you could buy her a less expensive toy and put the rest in a savings account for her. As others have said she may get bored quickly with a toy, but may thank you loads if she has a large sum when she is older. :)
  • You can spend as much you can afford
  • I personally don't spend more than £10 on toys because kids get bored of them or they break.

Why not buy a cheaper toy and pad the present out by making her some cookies or cake, add a plastic tiara and wand and you will have a gift that any little girl is sure to love
